BMD Group First Quarter Highlights

The first quarter of 2014 was characterised by numerous project highlights, the completion of iconic projects, and the celebration of a range of notable milestones.

In early 2014, work continued on the Legacy Way interchange upgrade, which is now 75% complete, to install concrete barriers, drainage, road pavements and lighting on the outbound and inbound lanes of the Western Freeway. Work was also completed to modify the intersection at Burbong Street and Moggill Road by installing new traffic signals, line markings and a new pedestrian signalised crossing. The upgrade will cater for changed traffic patterns at the Moggill Road and Western Freeway Interchange.

The Robinson Road Open Level Crossing Replacement Project has recently achieved a major milestone with the opening of the road overpass bridge to traffic on Monday 24 March 2014. With the road overpass bridge open to traffic, work now continues on other major components of this complex project, including the construction of the pedestrian overpass bridge, Queensland Rail car park and plaza area and the Morrisby Street connection to Newman Road, Geebung.

February saw BMD Constructions’ commence work on the Roads and Services contracts as part of the Port of Melbourne Corporation’s $1.6 billion Port Capacity project at Webb Dock. The contract will deliver important ‘backbone’ infrastructure including roads, utilities and buffer zones. This infrastructure will enable the Port’s new terminal operators to fast track the development of their facilities which includes a new international container terminal, an expanded auto terminal and a dedicated ‘on-port’ pre-delivery inspection hub.

BMD Constructions was awarded Stage 3 of the Camden Valley Way in mid-March. The scope of works for Stage 3 will comprise of composite pavement construction, including lean mix concrete and asphalt; construction of bridges over the Eastern Gas Pipeline and Heritage listed Sydney Water Canal; and twin bridges over Bonds Creek. Service relocations for Telstra, Sydney Water and Gas providers are also included in the project.

In Victoria, the Wedge Street Pedestrian Bridge project was announced the winner of the Capital Project Award in the $1 million and over category for the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) 2014 Victorian Excellence Awards. This BMD project was also highly commended for; Excellence in Civil Construction at the 2013 Victorian CCF Earth Awards for Category 2 (projects between $1 million and $5 million). This award recognises BMD’s capability to deliver innovative public infrastructure for local communities.

As the market continues its resurgence in South East Queensland, BMD Urban is working closely with development company Stockland and their engineering teams to ensure their Freshwater, Stoneridge, Augustine Heights and Sovereign Pocket urban development projects are delivered in a timely manner. BMD Urban has also been awarded the Commonwealth Games Village project in the Gold Coast, which is due to commence construction in July 2014. The redevelopment will provide vital infrastructure for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and in the longer-term will form the key residential, commercial and retail part of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct.

JMac Constructions is currently upgrading the Brunswick Street Mall project to revitalise the popular public space in Fortitude Valley. JMac is also currently working on a range of projects including Robelle Domain Stage 2, Springfield; CBD Play For All, Brisbane Botanical Gardens and the Port Capacity Project, Port of Melbourne.

Urbex continue to deliver key projects in the Northern Territory, with the final stage of Johnston Ridge in Palmerston, being released to market for sale, signifying the completion of this phase of the development a staggering three years ahead of schedule. Significant land releases continue in Palmerston with 750 lots in stage three and four of Zuccoli recently announced by Urbex.

Alongside our current projects, our capability continues to be demonstrated through the completion of major projects including the Brisbane Airport’s New Parallel Runway, Hay Point Expansion and the RAAF Base at Amberley. These projects are a true reflection of our exceptional performance and growth in the airport, resources and energy sectors.

The quarter also saw BMD continue with their Health, Safety, Environment and Quality program by taking part in a range of National initiatives including Clean Up Australia Day, International Women’s Day and Boardies Day. More recently, graduate staff flew into Queensland to take part in the annual BMD Graduate Initiative and were invited to learn more about the company on board the M.V Curtis Ambassador.
