Sunbury Electrification Alliance

20 July 2010

Victorian Transport Minister, Mr Martin Pakula, turned the first sod at the $270m Sunbury (Rail) Electrification Project where BMD Constructions is a sub-alliance partner with Laing O'Rouke and O'Donnell Griffin (ODG).

The Sunbury Electrification project will electrify the rail line from Watergardens to Sunbury. This will improve train capacity and reliability in the Sydneham-Sunbury corridor, which is vital to the ongoing viability of Melbourne's broader train network.

The project scope includes the construction of overhead electrical wires along the 15km rail corridor, signalling, communications and electrical services along the corridor and associated substations, upgrade to Sunbury Station, Diggers Rest Station and the construction of a controls room at Watergardens Station.

Specifically the civil and stations scope of works entails the construction of:

  • 500m of a 3m high retaining wall;
  • extension of the existing platforms at Sunbury Station and Diggers Rest Station;
  • extension of the Sunbury Station car park;
  • car park at Diggers Rest Station, construction of four substations and tie stations;
  • construction of a drivers facility at Sunbury Station;
  • extension of the existing Sunbury Station building and Diggers Rest Station building; and
  • construction of a control room building at Watergardens Station.

Also included within the civil and station scope of works is the upgrade of Sunbury and Diggers Rest station to be DDA compliant, and installation of 16.5km of conduit from Watergardens to Sunbury.
