Jubilee Bridge - Innisfail

13 September 2011 - More than 2000 people gathered for a morning of celebrations as the $21.6 million Jubilee Bridge was declared open on Saturday September 3rd.

Relinking both sides of the town south of Cairns for the first time in 14 months, the new 15.8m-wide structure replaces a 5.5m-wide bridge built in 1923 for the town's 50th Jubilee celebrations.

Construction of the new bridge commenced in June last year with the existing bridge being demolished after being declared unsafe.

The bridge added to the town's art deco claims, Innisfail Art Deco in the Tropics president Wendy Zerner said. "It is beautiful and we will be adding it to the art deco tour of Innisfail," she said.

The day was a historic one for the town, Mayor Bill Shannon said.

"The old Jubilee Bridge was a town landmark for 87 years," he said.

"We are expecting our new Jubilee Bridge, with its significantly deeper piles and with new technology, to be a landmark for much longer."

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh performed the official ribbon cutting ceremony.
