Hay Point Expansion Project
16 December 2011
Hay Point Coal Terminal is wholly owned by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, and is currently undergoing its third expansion to increase capacity from 44mtpa (million tonnes per annum) to 55mtpa. The overall expansion includes the replacement of the existing jetty, a new third berth, trestle, surge bins and out-loading conveyors.
In late 2010, BMD Constructions was awarded the Hay Point Expansion project, with work starting in December of the same year.
Over the last twelve months, the project has faced many significant challenges, including the safe relocation of more than 600 protected plants and the construction of stormwater infrastructure during one of the wettest summers in history. The project also required 80% of new staff and 100% of new workforce to be recruited from the Mackay and surrounding regions.
The project team have overcome these challenges, and countless others, to progressively deliver the project within the contract milestones. In addition to the original contract, BMD has recently been awarded Onshore Civil Package contributing a further $43 million to the contract, thereby increasing the original contract value at award of $50 million to currently in excess of $143 million. The award of the Onshore Civil Package results in making the Hay Point Expansion of the largest ever undertaken by BMD in the mining and resources sector.
Works largely involve the reclamation of 10.2 hectares of land including the excavation, processing and hauling of 1.3Mt of material. Major scope items include:
- 1.3Mt of bulk earthworks;
- 25,000m2 of pavements and 9,000m2 of heavy duty pavements;
- 13ML sediment basin;
- Installation of permanent traffic signals at the Hay Point Road intersection;
- Stormwater transfer and pump station;
- Relocation and protection of 300mm DICL watermain;
- Surge Bin foundations and works;
- Transfer tower footings and slabs;
- Conveyor footings and slabs;
- Electrical substations;
- Extensive service installation;
- Construction and operation of a 3.8km one way heavy vehicle haul road; and
- Revegetation of Hay Point Quarry.
The project team are looking forward to 2012 at Hay Point and improving their performance across all facets of the project to put BMD in a position to become a key contractor to the mining industry.
