Barton Highway - Gounyan Curves Realignment
2 August 2011 - BMD Constructions was awarded the contract to deliver a 4.4km realignment and upgrade of Barton Highway, 41.85km north of Canberra at Gounyan Curves. Major quantities within the scope include 256,000m3 of earthworks, 44,000 tonnes of imported bridging material, 21,000m3 of site won bridging material, and 51,000 tonnes of road base.
Currently 90 percent of cut/fill associated bridging layers have been completed; 2.2km of pavement ready for road base; and a temporary side track constructed with traffic switched.
Geographically the location is famous for hard rock boulders and cold weather. The team has overcome the challenge of excavating four 5m x 4m boulders which weighed up to 200 tonnes each, but is still battling with the -6oC weather.
The project is due for completion in November 2011.
Further information and updates on the project are available at the RTA website.
